On-Farm Trials
Introduction
On-Farm Trials (OFTs) are a core activity of Krishi Vigyan Kendras (KVKs) aimed at testing and refining agricultural technologies in farmers’ fields under real farming conditions. At Shri Siddhagiri KVK, Kaneri, Kolhapur, OFTs are conducted to assess the location-specific feasibility and effectiveness of new technologies developed by research institutions, with the active participation of local farmers.
Objectives of OFTs
To identify agricultural technologies suitable for the agro-climatic conditions of Kolhapur district.
To assess and refine the performance of newly released crop varieties, farming techniques, and resource management practices.
To bridge the gap between research recommendations and practical field applications.
To empower farmers through scientific validation of improved technologies.
Focus Areas
Our OFTs are conducted across various thematic areas, including:
Crop Production: Evaluation of improved varieties, integrated nutrient management, water-saving techniques, etc.
Horticulture: Testing of high-yielding varieties, disease-resistant cultivars, and organic management practices.
Animal Husbandry: Trials on breed performance, feed formulation, and disease management.
Plant Protection: Validation of integrated pest and disease management strategies.
Natural Resource Management: Soil health management, water conservation, and climate-resilient practices.
Farm Mechanization: Assessment of new implements and machinery suitable for small and marginal farmers.
Methodology
Identification of key problems in farmers’ practices through field surveys and interactions.
Selection of suitable technologies from research institutions (SAUs, ICAR institutes, etc.).
Planning and implementation of trials with the active involvement of selected farmers.
Data collection, analysis, and comparison with local practices.
Sharing of results through field days, demonstrations, and publications.
Outcomes and Impact
Enhanced productivity and profitability for participating farmers.
Promotion of sustainable and eco-friendly farming practices.
Scientific validation of technologies under local field conditions.
Creation of model farmers and villages for further technology dissemination.
