Frontline Demonstrations
Introduction
Frontline Demonstrations (FLDs) are an integral part of the extension mandate of Krishi Vigyan Kendras (KVKs). Through FLDs, Shri Siddhagiri KVK introduces and showcases proven agricultural technologies and innovations directly on farmers’ fields under their real-world farming conditions. These demonstrations aim to convince farmers about the benefits of adopting scientific practices and improved technologies by seeing the results first-hand.
Objectives of FLDs
To demonstrate the production potential of improved agricultural technologies and practices.
To create awareness and build confidence among farmers regarding new varieties, tools, and techniques.
To promote rapid adoption of research-based innovations for increased productivity and profitability.
To gather feedback from farmers to further refine extension strategies and technologies.
Key Areas of FLDs
Our FLDs cover a broad range of sectors relevant to the Kolhapur region:
Cereal and Pulse Crops: Demonstrations of high-yielding and climate-resilient varieties, integrated crop management, and precision nutrient application.
Oilseeds and Millets: Focus on productivity enhancement, drought tolerance, and value addition.
Horticulture: Improved varieties of fruits and vegetables, integrated nutrient and pest management.
Livestock Production: Scientific feeding, disease prevention, and breed improvement practices.
Integrated Farming Systems: Diversified models that include crops, livestock, horticulture, and allied enterprises.
Farm Mechanization: Demonstrating use of small-scale, farmer-friendly machinery and equipment.
Natural Resource Management: Water-use efficiency, soil health improvement, and organic farming techniques.
Implementation Process
Selection of progressive farmers and representative sites in different blocks of Kolhapur district.
Orientation of farmers about the objectives and protocols of demonstrations.
Supply of critical inputs such as seeds, bio-fertilizers, micronutrients, or equipment as per project guidelines.
Regular technical support and monitoring by KVK scientists during the crop/livestock cycle.
Conduct of field days and farmer interactions to disseminate results to a larger audience.
Monitoring and Evaluation
Each FLD is scientifically laid out with proper control and treated plots, and monitored systematically. Data is recorded on key parameters such as yield, pest/disease incidence, cost-benefit ratio, and farmer feedback. The results are analyzed and shared with stakeholders and policymakers for wider scaling-up.
Impact of FLDs
Increased awareness and adoption of improved agricultural technologies in the region.
Enhanced yield and income of beneficiary farmers.
Development of farmer role models and demonstration plots for peer learning.
Strengthening of farmer–scientist linkages.
