Extension Activities

Introduction

Extension is the backbone of knowledge dissemination in agriculture. At Shri Siddhagiri Krishi Vigyan Kendra (KVK), Kaneri, Kolhapur, extension activities serve as a vital link between research institutions and the farming community. Our goal is to promote the adoption of scientific, sustainable, and profitable agricultural practices through continuous interaction, awareness, and capacity building of farmers and stakeholders. We use a multi-channel approach to reach farmers in even the most remote parts of Kolhapur district, helping them solve location-specific problems and make informed decisions.

Objectives of Extension Activities

  • To create awareness about improved agricultural technologies.

  • To disseminate region-specific best practices in agriculture and allied sectors.

  • To provide timely technical guidance and problem-solving support.

  • To strengthen farmer–scientist interactions and participatory learning.

  • To facilitate convergence with government schemes, NGOs, SHGs, and FPOs.

Major Extension Activities Conducted

1. Kisan Melas (Farmers’ Fairs)

Large-scale events where thousands of farmers gather to interact with scientists, input suppliers, and development agencies. Technologies, farm machinery, and agri-products are showcased.

2. Field Days and Method Demonstrations

Organized at farmers’ fields to demonstrate the effectiveness of technologies promoted through OFTs and FLDs. These events provide visual learning and encourage peer-to-peer interaction.

3. Farmers’ Group Meetings and Interface Programs

Small-group interactions to identify field-level challenges, understand farmers’ needs, and provide technical advice.

5. Mobile Agro-Advisory Services

Weather-based and crop-specific SMS advisories are sent regularly to registered farmers in local language (Marathi) through the Kisan Sarathi portal and other ICT platforms.

6. Use of Mass Media

  • Radio talks and phone-in programs on All India Radio (AIR)

  • Articles in local newspapers and agri-magazines

  • Use of YouTube and social media platforms to disseminate success stories, training videos, and technical updates.

7. Exhibitions and Agri-Tech Shows

KVK regularly participates in district-level and state-level agri exhibitions to display successful interventions, technologies, and services.

8. Plant and Animal Health Camps
